Many people assume that if they have health insurance they do not need to carry Uninsured Motorist (UM) in Tennessee. These are typically the same people who feel like they don't need medical payments coverage on their policy... (we will tackle that topic soon!) The benefits of all of the separate coverage of medical payments coverage and health insurance are substantial, but there are many different avenues of coverage under UM that would not be covered under your health insurance or your medical payments.

UM protects you financially if you're in an accident with a driver who's found at fault in your accident and either does not have any insurance, does not have enough insurance, or is a hit-and-run driver. UM pays for what you're legally entitled to from the at fault driver. Many times the damages that are awarded in court go beyond what your health insurance or medical payments coverage would provide.

For Example...

If you were involved in an accident with an uninsured driver and you were severely injured. Because of the at fault driver not having insurance, your uninsured motorist coverage would step in (up to your policy limits) to not only cover your current and future medical bills. It would also provide coverage for your lost wages, medical supplies (like a wheelchair or special van to transport your wheelchair), home modifications to make getting around your house easier, expenses to help around the house, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and more.

As you can see, your medical payments would be quickly spent and your health insurance wouldn't provide coverage for most of these potential losses. Plus, with your health insurance, you could also have co-pays and deductibles. Typically, UM coverage isn't very expensive, and when you compare the costs of what you could lose, the coverage becomes even more valuable.
